Burberry introduces a scarf made from lab-grown Brewed Protein fibre.

This innovative product marks Burberry as the first luxury brand to utilize this next-generation fabric, emphasizing a strong commitment to sustainability in high fashion.

Crafted in Italy, the scarf features a luxurious blend of 62% wool, 8% cashmere, and 30% Brewed Protein fibre.

The unique material is produced through a fermentation process that converts plant-based ingredients into polymers, which are then transformed into textiles. This sustainable approach not only reduces reliance on traditional materials but also aligns with Burberry’s ongoing efforts to innovate while minimizing environmental impact.

The design of the scarf showcases Burberry’s rich heritage and dedication to craftsmanship. It features the iconic B shield motif, inspired by the brand’s Equestrian Knight Design, and is finished with twisted fringes that add a contemporary touch. The combination of soft textures and innovative materials results in a product that is both stylish and functional, perfect for the modern consumer who values sustainability.

Kazuhide Sekiyama, Director and Representative Executive Officer of Spiber Inc., expressed excitement about the collaboration, noting that Brewed Protein fibre represents over two decades of research and development. He emphasized that this partnership with Burberry signifies a significant expansion in the use of protein-based materials, contributing to a circular economy while showcasing the potential of microorganisms used in production.

Burberry’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond this scarf. The brand is actively exploring alternative manufacturing processes and agricultural techniques to further reduce its environmental footprint. For instance, it has partnered with Mediterranean Agro Technologies to develop hydroponic cotton farming methods that conserve water and minimize land use. Additionally, Burberry is collaborating with Circotex to implement waterless dyeing technologies powered by renewable energy.

Caroline Laurie, Burberry’s VP of Corporate Responsibility, highlighted the brand’s ongoing evolution in fabric innovation.

“We pride ourselves on finding new ways to innovate by joining forces with our suppliers and start-ups,”

she stated. This approach not only challenges traditional practices but also positions Burberry as a leader in sustainable luxury fashion.

The Brewed Protein scarf is now available both in-store and online, inviting consumers to experience this fusion of luxury and sustainability firsthand. As Burberry continues to push boundaries in textile innovation, it sets a precedent for other luxury brands to follow suit in prioritizing environmental responsibility without compromising on style or quality.
