Matthieu Blazy will be Chanel’s new artistic director starting 2025.
Blazy, a French-Belgian designer, is set to take over from Virginie Viard, who has led the brand since 2019 following the death of the iconic Karl Lagerfeld.
Viard’s departure was somewhat abrupt and marked by mixed reviews regarding her tenure, which saw record sales but also criticisms for lacking the theatricality associated with Lagerfeld’s era.
Blazy’s appointment is seen as a fresh start for Chanel, as he is only the fourth designer to helm the brand in a century. Known for his innovative approach and respect for craftsmanship, Blazy has garnered attention for his work at Bottega Veneta, where he revitalized the brand with new design concepts and collaborations. His designs have included notable pieces such as the encrusted mask worn by Kanye West during his Yeezus tour and unique interpretations of classic materials like leather. Chanel’s president, Bruno Pavlovsky, praised Blazy’s “audacious” vision and expressed confidence that he would honor the house’s heritage while steering it towards exciting new directions.
As Blazy transitions to Chanel, Bottega Veneta has announced Louise Trotter as its new creative director, effective January 2025. Trotter comes from Carven and has previously held positions at Lacoste and Joseph. She is recognized for her ability to blend everyday inspirations with high fashion and is expected to bring her own vision to Bottega Veneta while building on Blazy’s legacy. Trotter’s appointment reflects a desire within Bottega Veneta to maintain its reputation for understated luxury and craftsmanship.
In another notable shift within the fashion world, John Galliano is set to depart from Maison Margiela after a decade-long tenure as artistic director. Galliano’s time at Margiela has been marked by avant-garde creativity and a series of impactful shows that redefined the brand’s identity. His departure comes after a successful year for the brand, which saw heightened interest in its couture collections and notable appearances on red carpets.
These leadership changes signal a dynamic period for these prestigious fashion houses as they navigate evolving consumer expectations and strive to maintain their relevance in an increasingly competitive market. The industry will be closely watching how these new appointments unfold and shape the future of luxury fashion.
