Delali Ayivi: Connecting African Identity and Fashion Through Photography

Delali Ayivi began her photography journey by documenting friends and family across Togo, Germany and Malawi. Inspired by her great great grandfather, a Togolese photographer, she developed a distinctive approach to capturing the people and places around her through a fashion focused lens. While still in school, Ayivi launched two photo series that were featured in Vogue Germany, marking an early breakthrough in her career.

In 2022, Ayivi photographed Aminata Touré, Germany’s first Black female minister, for the cover of Vogue Germany. Her work was also featured at the PhotoVogue Festival from 2021 to 2023, before she was commissioned by PhotoVogue in 2023 to produce original work. The following year, she moved further into commercial photography with her first major project for African fashion company Vlisco.

Ayivi has continued to build an international portfolio, most recently photographing British athlete Katarina Johnson Thompson for British Vogue. She has also contributed to publications including DAZED, Atmos and Boy Brother Friend. Through her photography, Ayivi continues to explore African identity, fashion and contemporary visual culture, creating images that reflect both personal heritage and a changing creative landscape.
