FF Projects presents WHAT COMES TO MIND WHEN YOU SEE THE GARMENT?, the first solo exhibition with the gallery by Lagos-based photographer Stephen Tayo and the fourth presentation within FF Projects’ year-long residency at Alára, Lagos. Running from 1 August to 20 September 2026, the exhibition sees Tayo depart from the vibrant colour palette that has defined much of his work, instead presenting a striking black-and-white photographic series exploring the Aladura movement, a strand of Pentecostal Christianity that emerged among Yoruba communities in the early twentieth century.

Turning his lens toward Aladura devotees, Tayo documents moments before and after worship, capturing flowing white robes, elaborate headwear, and bare feet moving through the streets of Lagos. Known as sutana, aso-funfun, or simply “the garment,” the white robe carries deep spiritual meaning rooted in both Yoruba cosmology and Christian scripture. Through a documentary approach, the exhibition examines how clothing functions not simply as dress but as a visible expression of faith, identity, history, and community.

Best known for photographing fashion, youth culture, and the creative energy of Lagos, Tayo brings that same sensitivity to this body of work, revealing the intersections of spirituality, culture, and everyday life. Families, children, and the city’s streets become part of the narrative, while his background in philosophy informs a thoughtful exploration of belief systems and the communities they shape. An accompanying artist book will be released alongside the exhibition, extending this intimate study of one of Nigeria’s enduring spiritual traditions.
