Chanel made a spectacular return to the Grand Palais for Paris Fashion Week, marking its first appearance at the iconic venue in four years.
The show, themed around a birdcage, not only celebrated the brand’s illustrious history but also evoked the legacy of the late Karl Lagerfeld, who famously transformed the Grand Palais into a stage for his visionary designs.
The Grand Palais was transformed into a stunning aviary, featuring a giant white birdcage at its center. This striking centerpiece was reminiscent of Chanel’s iconic 1992 advertisement featuring Vanessa Paradis, where she appeared on a swing inside a birdcage. This time, Elvis Presley’s granddaughter, Riley Keough, took to the swing to perform Prince’s classic hit “When Doves Cry,” adding an enchanting musical element to the show.
Chanel’s collection was rich with feathers and plumes, paying homage to Gabrielle Chanel’s fascination with birds and flight. The designs showcased a blend of classic Chanel elements—such as tweed and flapper dresses—infused with contemporary flair. Standout pieces included crocheted bomber jackets adorned with ruff-like collars and vintage-style gowns inspired by French writer Colette’s glamorous cabaret performances.
Despite the absence of a creative director since Virginie Viard’s departure in June, Chanel’s studio team crafted a collection that resonated with the brand’s timeless aesthetics. The runway featured an array of styles, from serious black-and-white ensembles to playful pastel tweeds and bohemian-inspired garments. Models sported relaxed hairstyles and accessorized with charming birdcage mini-bags and quilted backpacks.
Chanel’s chief, Bruno Pavlovsky, emphasized that the brand would take its time in selecting Viard’s successor, ensuring that the next creative leader aligns with Chanel’s long-term vision. He noted that the current collection is a testament to the strength and resilience of the brand during this transitional period.
The show also served as a statement of confidence amid uncertain times for luxury fashion houses, particularly as consumer spending has shifted. By returning to the Grand Palais—now bearing Gabrielle Chanel’s name—the brand aimed to reaffirm its status and heritage in the fashion world.
As models walked beneath the grand structure, adorned in feather-laden creations, it became clear that Chanel is committed to honoring its legacy while embracing innovation. The combination of stunning designs and captivating performances ensured that this Paris Fashion Week show would be remembered as a celebration of creativity and resilience in the face of change.
Chanel continues to be a beacon of style and sophistication, proving that even without a single guiding designer, its spirit remains unflappable and vibrant.
