Phyll Quahsey at La Fashion Week 2025

Ghanaian designer of the Style Lounge Platform, Phyll Quahsey emerged as one of the week’s defining voices, securing 3rd place at the Concours Marie Thérèse Houphouët Boigny by La Fashion Week 2025, powered by Heineken.

His winning look, “Nyaniba”, drew inspiration from Asase Yaa, the Earth Goddess, and the regal authority of the Ghanaian Queen Mother, Phyll translated spiritual grounding and feminine power into a modern visual language. The piece reimagined these ancestral references through Heineken’s bold brand colours and creative framework, creating a seamless dialogue between African symbolism and contemporary minimalism.

Rooted in the Ankyem philosophy of freedom and renewal, Nyaniba presented a liberated African goddess confident, intentional, and forward facing. On the runway, the look moved with quiet authority. Calm yet commanding, luminous without excess, it embodied clarity as power. You didn’t need it explained. You felt it.

Crafted from structured white crepe, the gown features a clean one-shoulder silhouette that sculpts the body with precision and restraint. The asymmetrical neckline and exposed shoulder convey quiet strength, confidence, and modern elegance. The dress follows a slim, elongated line through the body, finishing at a fluid hem that allows subtle movement on the runway.

A hooded scarf, seamlessly attached to the single shoulder, drapes over the head and flows down the back. Its vivid red lining is revealed with each step, creating a striking contrast against the white exterior. This red accent subtly references Heineken’s iconic star, while evoking passion, vitality, and divine feminine energy.

Carved wooden appliqué detailing runs vertically along one side of the gown, beginning at the upper torso and extending toward the hem. The wooden elements transition in tone from silver at the bodice, symbolizing clarity and reflection, into Heineken green along the lower torso, representing growth, renewal, and evolution. This sculptural detail pays homage to African craftsmanship and reinforces Phyll Quahsey’s signature use of wood as a contemporary design language.

Phyll Quahsey’s moment at La Fashion Week 2025 (@lfwekofficiel ) wasn’t just a win for one designer. It was proof of what happens when African designers are given the space to tell their stories on their own terms grounded in culture, fluent in modernity, and unapologetically global. For the Style Lounge Platform designer, It was a continuation.
