Statues Also Breathe: Memory, Resistance, and the Power of Collective Voice

MACAAL Museum came alive with Statues Also Breathe, a profound collaboration between Catharsis Art Foundation and artist Prune Nourry. Conceived as both an act of remembrance and a call to conscience, the exhibition transforms the museum into a space of reflection, empathy, and dialogue, where art becomes a vehicle for confronting history and reimagining collective responsibility.

At the heart of the project is an extraordinary convergence of voices and experiences. The exhibition brings together the Department of Fine & Applied Arts at Obafemi Awolowo University, 108 students from across Nigeria, the families of the Chibok girls abducted in 2014, survivors who escaped captivity, and Nourry herself. Through sculpture and collaborative creation, the work confronts the violence inflicted on education particularly the education of girls while honoring lives disrupted and stories that remain unfinished.

With over 1,300 guests in attendance at its opening, Statues Also Breathe stands as a powerful gesture of memory, solidarity, and resistance. More than an exhibition, it is a collective act of witnessing one that insists on remembrance, amplifies silenced voices, and reaffirms the enduring role of art in shaping justice, healing, and hope.
