At Art Basel Paris, Miu Miu’s exhibition “Tales & Tellers” is on display at Palais d’Iéna from October 16 to 20, 2024.
This exhibition is not just a showcase of fashion; it is a vibrant exploration of storytelling through the lens of women’s experiences, featuring films, performances, and interactive installations.
The exhibition is conceptualized by interdisciplinary artist Goshka Macuga, known for her ability to weave narratives through art. Macuga has reinterpreted Miu Miu’s acclaimed Women’s Tales film series, which has been a platform for female filmmakers since its inception in 2011. The series has featured notable directors such as Agnès Varda, Miranda July, and Ava DuVernay, each bringing unique perspectives on femininity and womanhood.
At the heart of “Tales & Tellers” is the idea of activating these films in a new context. Visitors will encounter characters extracted from the various films, each representing diverse narratives and experiences. The installation transforms the Palais d’Iéna into an interactive environment where these characters come to life, engaging the audience in a dialogue that transcends traditional viewing experiences.
The exhibition features:
– Film Screenings: All short films from the Women’s Tales series will be screened, providing a comprehensive look at the evolution of women’s narratives over the past decade.
– Interactive Installations: Attendees can engage with the films in innovative ways, such as picking up a film from a box of fabric or sitting at a dressing table to view another. This hands-on approach invites visitors to immerse themselves fully in the characters’ worlds.
– Panel Discussions: A series of conversations featuring prominent figures in film and art will take place throughout the exhibition. These discussions aim to delve deeper into themes of femininity and storytelling.
The exhibition also includes contributions from Elvira Dyangani Ose, director of the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, who emphasizes the importance of diverse voices in shaping contemporary narratives about women. Dyangani Ose’s involvement underscores Miu Miu’s commitment to fostering an environment where women’s stories can be told and celebrated.
Miu Miu’s founder, Miuccia Prada, has long been an advocate for women’s issues through her work. She expresses her desire for this exhibition to serve as a platform for ongoing conversations about femininity and identity in today’s world. “Tales & Tellers” not only showcases fashion but also reflects on how societal changes influence women’s perspectives and experiences.
The exhibition is free to the public, making it accessible for all who wish to explore these rich narratives. It runs daily from 10 AM to 7 PM CEST during its five-day run at Palais d’Iéna, located at 9 Place D’Iéna, 75016 Paris.
As visitors navigate through “Tales & Tellers,” they become part of a larger conversation about womanhood and identity, witnessing how fashion can serve as a powerful medium for storytelling. This innovative approach positions Miu Miu not just as a fashion house but as a cultural institution committed to exploring and amplifying women’s voices in art and beyond.
