Debonair Afrik Celebrates Its First Graduates Fashion Education Scholarship Program (FESP).

Debonair Afrik celebrates its first graduates of Fashion Education Scholarship Program (FESP).

A milestone in its mission to uplift and empower Ghana’s young fashion talents with hands-on skills, dedicated mentorship, and connections that can open doors in the industry.

After six immersive months of study at JACCD Design Institute Africa, scholarship recipients Frank Osei and Mavis Oforiwa Ama Awuah are stepping confidently into the fashion world, equipped with skills and creativity that will shape their careers. The program provided a rich blend of garment construction, creative design, and practical training that has prepared them for what lies ahead.

Reflecting on her journey, Mavis shared,

“The training focused mainly on illustration, pattern making, and sewing.”

Through her studies, she gained a newfound confidence in creating everything from gowns to ready-to-wear pieces and menswear.

“As an aspiring designer, these skills mean I can bring my ideas to life. I now understand the full process—from pattern making and fabric selection to sewing and finishing,”

she explained.

Inspired by her favorite quote,

“Don’t give up on your dreams; if I can achieve it, so can you,”

Mavis is ready to dive into her career, armed with new techniques and a clear vision.

Frank Osei, who graduated alongside Mavis, highlighted the transformative nature of the program. He spent months perfecting “garment construction, tailoring, and textile manipulation,” all of which helped him see fashion design in a whole new light.

“Through FESP, I was able to gain the needed skills and confidence to design with structure and purpose. I now feel prepared to create garments that tell a story and represent my style,”

 he said.

The scholarship is funded by proceeds from Debonair Afrik’s annual The Editors Meet Brunch. Graduates like Frank and Mavis will continue to receive ongoing support through internships, mentorships, and networking opportunities with some of the industry’s leading fashion houses and mentors. These experiences are meant to help them build lasting connections, gain real-world insights, and take their craft to the next level.

Nuel Bans, the creative force behind Debonair Afrik, shared his vision for the program’s impact.

“Through FESP, we’re not just investing in the education of young designers; we’re building a community that supports their growth and development. By offering continued mentorship and industry exposure, we’re laying the groundwork for their future success.”

For Mavis and Frank, this graduation is just the beginning. Both expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity, and they’re excited to bring fresh ideas and new skills to the Ghanaian fashion scene. With a foundation rooted in practical skills, strong mentorship, and inspiring connections, they’re ready to bring their designs to life.

Debonair Afrik remains dedicated to fostering the future of Ghanaian fashion, with FESP as a driving force behind its mission to support, inspire, and grow Africa’s next generation of fashion talent.
