Akan weights, an ancestral heritage of African culture, are now finding new expression through my creations, those of Andrea AKA ByOnèn.
Inspired by the Baoulé tradition, I reimagine these historical objects, once used to weigh gold, into contemporary accessories that blend authenticity and modernity.
My approach aims to showcase African cultural heritage while integrating it into current fashion trends. My goal is to change the perception of Akan weights, often seen as linked to an ancient aesthetic or an older generation, by making them accessible to a young and international audience. For me, this represents a true reconstruction and reinterpretation of this heritage, while maintaining its essence.
To achieve this, I integrate my creations into contemporary settings, giving them new life and making them relevant in today’s world. Often seen as imposing and purely ceremonial, these weights are reinterpreted by me into elegant and accessible pieces suited for everyday life.
Driven by a desire to celebrate African craftsmanship, this initiative adopts a “Made in Africa” approach, reaffirming the continent’s place in modern and sophisticated fashion creation.
