Milan Fashion Week Extends Schedule to Meet Industry Demands

In response to industry demands, MFW extends September 2024 schedule.

The event, which occurs between the fashion weeks in London and Paris, will now take place from September 17 to 23, adding an extra day to its previous lineup.

This decision follows a year of negotiations between the Italian fashion body Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana (CNMI) and its counterparts in the UK, US, and France. The British Fashion Council (BFC), the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), and the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode (FHCM) worked alongside CNMI to revise the calendar and establish the dates for the 2024 and 2025 fashion weeks across the four major fashion capitals: New York, London, Milan, and Paris.

The goal of this coordination is to prevent scheduling overlaps and create harmony within the international fashion calendar. This change will make it easier for industry professionals who travel between cities and brands on the schedule. Carlo Capasa, president of CNMI, expressed his satisfaction with this collaboration, stating that the agreement allows Milan to have an additional day for fashion shows, aligning with the needs of their brands and the fashion community.

The September 2024 edition of MFW will commence with a show by Fendi on Tuesday, September 17. Capasa had previously highlighted the necessity for Milan’s event to gain another day at the beginning of the week to manage its bustling calendar, which typically includes over 200 scheduled appointments.

The extension of MFW comes at a time when the fashion industry is undergoing significant changes. With London facing uncertainty in the post-Brexit landscape, many British designers have chosen to showcase their collections in Milan and Paris instead, where they are more likely to attract a wider range of international retailers and buyers. The recent menswear season in Milan saw an influx of British talent, including designers like J.W. Anderson, Martine Rose, Dunhill, and David Koma.

As the fashion world continues to evolve, this collaboration among major fashion capitals shows a commitment to adapting to industry changes and ensuring that each event remains relevant and appealing to a global audience.
