Moncler x Rick Owens

Rick Owens and Moncler have partnered to create a unique mountain refuge that reimagines shelter for extreme climates.

This project, which draws inspiration from the French Alps and the architectural legacy of Charlotte Perriand, showcases a unique blend of functionality and avant-garde aesthetics.

The mountain refuge, designed in collaboration with Hugh Broughton Architects, is constructed with a stainless steel monocoque shell comprising 20 precision-engineered, thermally insulated panels. This structure is not only visually striking but also highly functional, featuring adjustable stainless steel legs to stabilize it on rugged terrain and an airlock entry system to protect against harsh weather conditions. The design emphasizes energy autonomy, incorporating integrated photovoltaic roof panels, ground-based solar arrays, and a wind turbine to ensure reliable power storage. Furthermore, the refuge includes advanced water and waste management systems, such as snowmelt collection and greywater reclamation, making it a self-sustaining environment suitable for remote locations.

Inside the refuge, the aesthetic continues with Moncler’s signature materials. The interior is lined with Moncler duvet nylon and felted wool blankets, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that pays homage to Owens’ artistic influences. The space is designed for comfort and practicality, featuring a log-burning stove complemented by electric heaters for warmth in frigid conditions.

Alongside this architectural marvel, the collaboration features a clothing line that reflects the same rugged yet stylish ethos. The collection includes soft organic cotton long johns layered under duvet bodysuits that zip into sleeping cocoons, ideal for hibernation in extreme climates. Other pieces include dramatic quilted jackets and trousers, all designed to be functional while maintaining Owens’ avant-garde style.

This collaboration not only challenges traditional notions of fashion but also explores new ways of living in harmony with nature. By combining cutting-edge design with sustainable practices, Moncler and Rick Owens are setting a new standard for outdoor fashion that is both practical and artistically compelling. Their innovative approach pushes the boundaries of what is possible in fashion engineering, offering a glimpse into a future where clothing and shelter are seamlessly integrated into our environments.
