Sarah Burton Joins Givenchy as New Creative Director

Givenchy has appointed Sarah Burton, former creative director of Alexander McQueen, as their new creative lead.

After nearly a year of speculation, Burton’s new role at the iconic French house was confirmed, marking a significant chapter in her illustrious career. She will oversee both men’s and women’s collections for Givenchy, starting immediately.

“It is a great honour to be joining the beautiful house of Givenchy, it is a jewel,”

Burton shared in a statement on September 9.

“I am so excited to write the next chapter of this iconic house and bring my own vision and sensibility to it.”

Burton will soon meet with the ateliers in Paris, and her debut collection is slated for March 2025.

This appointment follows Burton’s departure from Alexander McQueen in September 2023, after 13 years as creative director and 26 years with the brand. Her last McQueen show was emotional, with supermodel Naomi Campbell closing the event in tears, and Burton receiving a standing ovation. Burton was praised for continuing Lee McQueen’s bold legacy while evolving the brand into a commercial success. Notably, Burton will once again be following in McQueen’s footsteps, as he too was Givenchy’s creative director from 1996 to 2001.

Sidney Toledano, chairman of Givenchy, expressed his excitement over Burton’s arrival, praising her as an exceptional talent. “Her unique vision and approach will be invaluable to Givenchy, known for its audacity and haute couture,” Toledano said. Alessandro Valenti, Givenchy’s new CEO, echoed the sentiment, calling Burton’s appointment an exciting moment for the brand. He emphasized her ability to captivate audiences and believes her leadership will shape the future success of Givenchy on a global scale.
