Sarah Burton’s debuting her first Givenchy line at PFW after her McQueen days.

Sarah Burton, the renowned British designer, is on the cusp of a new chapter in her illustrious career as she prepares to unveil her first collection for Givenchy at Paris Fashion Week in March 2025.

This marks a significant transition for Burton, who previously served as the creative director at Alexander McQueen for over a decade. Her appointment at Givenchy was met with excitement and anticipation, as she brings her unique vision and sensibility to the iconic French fashion house.

Before her official debut on the catwalk, Burton gave the world a glimpse of what’s to come through a stunning custom haute couture gown she designed for Elle Fanning at the 2025 Oscars. Fanning, who has a close relationship with Burton, was the perfect choice to debut this piece, which was inspired by Hubert de Givenchy’s first collection from 1952. The white lace dress featured a sweetheart neckline, a black belt detail, and a dramatic Watteau back, complemented by a retro cat-eye, a large top knot, and a vintage Cartier necklace from 1958.

Burton’s decision to draw inspiration from Givenchy’s early days reflects her approach to honoring the brand’s heritage while infusing it with her own creative energy. This blend of past and present is expected to be a hallmark of her upcoming collection, which promises to redefine the codes of elegance associated with Givenchy.

Sarah Burton’s journey to this moment began in Macclesfield, England, where she was born. She studied fashion at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, graduating in 1997. Her career took off when she joined Alexander McQueen in 1996, eventually becoming the Head of Design in 2000 under Lee Alexander McQueen. After McQueen’s passing, Burton took over as Creative Director in May 2010 and went on to create some of the most memorable fashion moments, including the wedding dress for HRH The Duchess of Cambridge in 2011.

Burton’s departure from Alexander McQueen in October 2023 marked the end of an era, but her new role at Givenchy signals a fresh beginning. As she embarks on this new chapter, Burton is poised to bring her unique vision and sensibility to the iconic French fashion house, promising to captivate audiences worldwide with her innovative designs.

The anticipation surrounding Burton’s debut collection is palpable, with many expecting a blend of her signature dramatic flair and Givenchy’s timeless elegance. As Elle Fanning’s stunning Oscar look has already hinted, this collection is likely to be a masterclass in reinventing classic styles for the modern era.
