Yaku Stapleton is a rising star in London’s vibrant fashion scene, known for his unique blend of streetwear and Afrofuturism.

Born in St Albans, just outside of London, Yaku’s journey into fashion was not always straightforward. Initially studying geography, he discovered his passion for design during a gap year, where he began crafting his own t-shirts. This led him to pursue fashion more seriously, eventually enrolling in a design course at Leeds Beckett University and later earning his master’s degree at Central Saint Martins, one of the world’s most prestigious fashion schools.

Yaku’s designs are deeply rooted in his family and personal experiences. He often reimagines his family members as characters with superpowers, blending these narratives with futuristic elements. For instance, his older sister is depicted as a powerful figure in an electric blue scuba suit, while his younger brother is represented by a Jesus piece crafted from scraps found in the Central Saint Martins studio. This approach not only adds a personal touch to his work but also reflects his interest in storytelling through fashion.

One of Yaku’s most notable influences is Afrofuturism, a cultural and philosophical movement that explores the intersection of science fiction, technology, and African diasporic culture. This influence is evident in his use of vibrant colors, futuristic silhouettes, and innovative materials. His designs often incorporate elements of science fiction and fantasy, making them both fantastical and tangible.

Yaku’s commitment to sustainability is another key aspect of his brand. He frequently uses deadstock fabrics and repurposed materials, transforming them through techniques like patchworking, dyeing, and heat gunning. This approach not only reduces waste but also gives his garments a unique, layered aesthetic.

In 2023, Yaku launched his eponymous brand, YAKU, with a debut collection titled

“The Impossible Family Reunion in RPG Space.” This collection marked the beginning of a series that continues to evolve with each new season. His Spring/Summer 2025 collection, “Looking Back to Look Forward to Look Back Again,” promises to transport viewers into an immersive world of fantasy and reality.

Yaku’s rise to prominence has been swift and celebrated. He was awarded the L’Oréal Creative Award, a testament to his innovative approach to fashion. His work has been featured in prominent fashion platforms, including London Fashion Week, where he showcased his unique blend of streetwear and Afrofuturism.
